TERSCHELLING - THE NETHERLANDS:

BACK

28 FEBRUARY - 3 MARCH 2003

During the last weekend of February 2003 we paid a long-weekend visit to the island of Terschelling together with our local birding group. Terschelling is one of the Wadden Islands located in the Wadden Sea just north of the province of Friesland. The ferry to the island leaves from the town of Harlingen and takes about two hours. Harlingen is about a 1½ hours drive from Amsterdam. From our home in the south of Holland it took about 2½ hours. Generally there are about 6 to 8 ferries per day. There is also a possibility to take the fast ferry which takes about 45 minutes. The boat trip itself is already a nice starting point for birding opportunities and you will probably see seals on the sandbars at low tide. The island has enough choice in accomodations and restaurants, and once on the island all birding spots can be easily reached by bycicle. During winter the island is teeming with wintering waders, ducks and geese.
